Mental health status among college student village leaders

  • Objective To explore mental health condition in college student village leaders,and to provide evidence for improving mental health level of the leaders.Methods A survey was conducted in 220 college student village leaders with Resilience Scale for Adults,Subjective Well-Being Scale,and Symptom Checklist-90 Brief Edition(SCL-90).Results Compared with those of national adult group,the college student village leaders had siginificantly lower scores for overall resilience(4.07±0.38 vs 5.13±0.41),organizational style(4.11±0.77 vs 4.92±0.58),sociability(3.77±0.68 vs 4.08±0.54),family cohesion(4.55±0.67 vs 5.26±0.62),social resource(3.39±0.74 vs 5.63±0.57),life satisfaction(3.70±1.38 vs 4.07±0.92),and positive emotionality(3.37±0.53 vs 3.79±0.49)(P<0.01 for all),but a higher score for negative emotionality(2.62±0.53 vs 2.16±0.66)(P<0.01).Compared with those of national adult group, the college student village leaders had significantly higher SCL-90 scores for psychological symptoms(1.97±0.71 vs 1.44±0.42),disability confusion(2.07±0.77 vs 1.53±0.45),somatization(1.86±0.81 vs 1.42±0.44),and interpersonal problems(1.84±0.71 vs 1.51±0.49)(P<0.05 for all).There were significant differences in mental health status among the college student village leaders of different gender,whether being a only-child,and whether having student cader experience(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion The mental health status of college student village leaders is poor.
