Associations of metabolic syndrome with high-sensitive C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 among Uygur residents in Xinjiang

  • Objective To investigate associations of metabolic syndrome(MS)and its components with high-sensitive C-reactive protein(hsCRP)and interleukin-6(IL-6)among Uygur residents in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Methods hsCRP,IL-6 and fasting insulin(FINS)of 419 residents were detected by using immune nephelometry,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),and radio immunoassay and height, weight, blood pressure, waist circumference(WC),and hip circumference(HC)of the residents were measured;then the body mass index(BMI)and waist-to-hip ratio(WHR)were calculated. Results The concentrations of hsCRP and IL-6 were significantly higher in the residents with MS than those without MS.The level of hsCRP and IL-6 increased gradually along with the increment of the number of MS components(P<0.01).Detection rates of MS components, such as high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance, were significantly higher in the residents with high level(quartile 4)of hsCRP and IL-6 when compared to those with lower level(quartile 1)(P<0.01).Conclusion The level of hsCRP and IL-6 are higher in Uygur residents with MS and rise along with the increment of the number of MS components.High concentration of serum hsCRP and IL-6 may be a valuable marker for MS.
