Hospitalization expenditure among inpatients with depressive disorders in a hospital in Shandong province,2005-2012

  • ObjectiveTo examine the hospitalization expenditure and its influencing factors among inpatients with depressive disorders and to provide references for reducing economic burden of depressive disorder.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted among 1 087 inpatients with depressive disorders and hospitalized during the period from 2005 to 2012.ResultsThe average hospitalization expense of the depressive patients increased with an annual growth rate of 38.00% from 2005 to 2012(11 077 RMB yuan in 2012).The treatment expenses grew rapidly from 19.51%(523.5 yuan)in 2005 to 45.77% in 2012(4 696 yuan).The proportion of drugs showed a downward trend(37.81% in 2005,19.87% in 2012).The first three components of hospitalization expenses were treatment,drugs and bed fee.Multiple linear regression showed that long duration of hospitalization,hospitalization in recent years,insurance and fewer admissions were associated with higher hospitalization expenditure.ConclusionTreatment,drug and bed fee are the main components of hospital costs and the main influencing factor of hospitalization expenditure for depressive disorder inpatients in Shandong province is hospitalization days.
