Otaku status and its influence factors among university students

  • Objective To analyze the status and influence factors of otaku among university students and to provide scientific evidences for healthy life promotion in the students.Methods Using multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method,1 178 college students from four universities in Chongqing city were investigated with a questionnaire survey on general situation,otaku status and influence factors.Results Of the students,62.50% spent their leisure time in dormitories and 50.51%(595)were categorized as otaku students.Of the otaku students,73.78%(439) spent their leisure time mainly on the internet,49.41%(294) for sleeping; 39.90%(470) stayed in their dormitories because of unwilling to move;50.54%(327)didn't think that otaku had influence on their life,and 33.08%(214) had no willingness to change their otaku life.There were statistically significant differences in the scores of Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90) for interpersonal sensitivity(t=4.320,P=0.000) and paranoid(t=3.159,P=0.002) between the otaku and the non-otaku students.Multivariate analyses found that school type,grade,the time spent online,and love status were main influence factors of otaku(P<0.05 for all).Conclusion Otaku is quite common in college students and influenced by various factors,and otaku students are more likely to suffer from interpersonal sensitivity and paranoid psychological problems.
