Intermediary role of resilience in relationship between parenting style and traumatic symptoms among kids and juveniles

  • ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between parenting style and traumatic symptoms and to establish a structural equation model for developing community health interventions.MethodsBy using multistage sampling,6 152 students at the ages of 12-17 years were selected from Shenyang,Dalian,Jinzhou,Dandong,Yingkou, and Liao-yang city and screened with Essen Trauma-Inventory,and then 1 793 students with traumatic experiences were surveyed with Parenting Style Scale,Essen Trauma-Inventory,and Resilience Scale from June through December,2013.The data collected were analyzed to establish a structural equation model.ResultsGender, parenting style, and resilience could explain 19.3%of the variance of the traumatic symptoms;parenting style had a direct effect(λ3=-0.20,P<0.05)and an indirect effect(λ5=-0.27,P<0.05)on traumatic symptoms through resilience which could explain 24.2%of the variance of traumatic symptoms among the 1 793 students.ConclusionParenting style has an intermediary effect on traumatic symptoms through resilience.
