Suicidal behavior among middle school students in Shenzhen city:a cross-sectional study

Objective To investigate the prevalence and influence factors of suicidal behavior among adolescent students in Shenzhen city.Methods Using two-stage random stratified cluster sampling,3206 students were recruited from 6 junior and 4 senior high schools and 4 vocational schools in Shenzhen city and a self-administered and anonymous survey was conducted among the students with a self-designed adolescent health knowledge questionnaire,Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children,and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire in 2014.Logistic regression analysis was used in data analysis.Results Of the 3206 eligible respondents,20.70% and 3.96% reported suicide ideation and attempt during the previous 12 months.Multivariate analyses showed that female gender(odds ratioOR=1.63,95% confidence interval95% CI=1.32-2.02),frequent quarrel between parents(OR=1.99,95% CI=1.15-3.43),poor relationship with teachers(OR=4.07,95% CI=2.29-7.23),feeling lonely(OR=3.66,95% CI=2.46-5.44),being bullied(OR=2.51,95% CI=1.67-3.79),depressive symptom(OR=2.66,95% CI=2.11-3.35),physical abuse(OR=1.99,95% CI=1.41-2.81),and sexual abuse(OR=1.73,95% CI=1.33-2.26)were risk factors for suicidal ideation and poor relationship with teachers(OR=7.88,95% CI=3.98-15.62),depressive symptom(OR=5.16,95% CI=3.31-8.06),physical abuse(OR=2.78,95% CI=1.64-4.72),sexual abuse(OR=2.27,95% CI=1.43-3.60),and alcohol drinking(OR=1.92,95% CI=1.23-2.99)were risk factors for suicidal attempt among the students.Conclusion Suicidal behavior is not rare among adolescent students in Shenzhen city.Teachers and parents should play a more active role in suicide prevention interventions to reduce the incidence of suicide-related behavior.
