Clinical manifestations and laboratory test results of the first imported Zika virus infection in Mainland China

  • Objective To analyze clinical manifestations and laboratory test results of the first imported Zika virus infection in Mainland China and to provide references for preventing Zika virus infection. Methods Epidemiological investigation and laboratory tests were conducted and relevant medical records were collected.Descriptive epidemiology method was adopted to analyze the clinical manifestations and laboratory test results. Results A 34 years old male local citizen was hospitalized on February 6, 2016 in Infectious Disease Department of Ganxian County People's Hospital for the treatment and isolation of Zika virus infection diagnosed based on positive result of Zika virus nucleic acid and negative results of chikungunya and dengue virus nucleic acid by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) at the hospital admission. The patient arrived in Ganxian county of Jiangxi province on February 5, 2016, travelling from Venezuela on February 2, 2016, via Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Dongguan of Guangdong province, China. The patient reported the history of mosquito bite and visiting a doctor due to fever on January 28, 2016 while staying in Venezuela. The patient was cured and discharged in February 14, 2016.The clinical manifestations of the patient were fever, dizziness, headache, chills, fatigue, skin rash, orbital pain, conjunctival hyperemia, and diarrhea. The counts of white blood cell and platelet were normal.Monocyte ratio and prothrombin time increased slightly, while the contents of albumin, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid decreased slightly.A mild emphysema change was observed in the left lung. The duration for Zika virus positive for urine samples of the patient was longer than that for serum samples. The nucleic acid of Zika virus in saliva samples was negative at the 15th days after the onset of the disease. Conclusion The reported case was an imported Zika virus infection with mild but typical clinical symptoms.Screening with urine and blood sample detections should be conducted among returning people from abroad with epidemic exposure history and fever and skin rash symptoms for early identification and treatment of the disease.
