Prevalence of pertussis and serum Bordetella pertussis antibody level among 1-15 years old children in Shenzhen city, 2009-2013

  • Objective To investigate prevalent characteristics and influencing factors of pertussis and to evaluate serum Bordetella pertussis antibody level among children in Shenzhen city for providing evidence for assessing immunization efficiency and scheduel. Methods Data on pertussis cases reported between 2009-2013 in Shenzhen city were extracted from Natinal Disease Surveillance Information for pertussis prevalence analysis.Enzym-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to detect surum Bordetella pertussis antibody level among community children aged 1-15 years selected with stratified random cluster sampling.Totally 23 reported petussis cases and 69 age-and residence-matched controls were surveyed with a questionnaire to analyze factors associated with petussis incidence. Results There were 163 cases of pertussis cases reported and the average annual incidence was 0.32/100000 in Shenzhen city during the period.More petussis cases were reported between July to August in a year and 85.27% of all reported cases were small children aged under 5 months.Among 256 community children receiving serum antibody test, the Bordetella pertussis positive rate was 38.30% and no significant difference in the positive rate was observed among the children of various age groups(χ2=4.737, P>0.05).The major infullencing factors for pertussis incidence included history of contact with cough sufferer, residential housing area and familial income. Conclusion Pertussis incidents occurred mainly among infants, with contacting with cough sufferer as a major risk factors, and serum Bordetella pertussis antibody level increased in children of various ages in Shenzhen city between 2009 and 2013.
