Prevalence and influence factors of abnormal glucose metabolism among adult residents in Fujian province

  • Objective To examine the prevalence and influence factors of abnormal glucose metabolism among adult residents in Fujian province, and to provide references for diabetes mellitus(DM) control and prevention. Methods Questionnaire survey, physical examination and laboratory detection were conducted in 6016 local residents aged 18 years or older, who were recruited with multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method, in Fujian province. Results Among the residents, the prevalence and the standardized prevalence of DM, pre-DM, impaired fasting glucose(IFG), and impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) were 10.6% and 8.0%, 19.5% and 16.7%, 6.8% and 6.2%, and 12.7% and 10.5%, respectively.Of the 640 DM cases identified, 63.1% were newly detected cases without prior diagnosis, in which 31.2% and 39.4% were isolated fasting hyperglycemia and isolated postchallenge hyperglycemia.Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that age, familial DM history, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and central obesity were risk factors for the development of glucose metabolism disorder, and living in rural area, with middle school or higher education, and with higher level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol were the protective factors. Conclusion The prevalence of pre-DM is high among adult residents in Fujian province, and age, family history of DM, central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, residential area, and education level are main influence factors of abnormal glucose metabolism.
