Current status and coping style of work stress among medical staff in Suzhou city

  • Objective To investigate current situation and coping style of work stress among medical personnel in Suzhou city of Jiangsu province.Methods A self-administered questionnaire survey on work stress and coping style to the stress was conducted with a general questionnaire and the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS) among 4 930 medical staff recruited with multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling in Suzhou city between January and December 2015.Results Of all the participants,4 718 answered the questionnaires validly,with a response rate of 95.70%.The average score of work stress was 26.58±6.07 for all the participants and 2 829 (59.96%) participants had the work stress score of greater than 25.The level of stress with potential health hazards differed significantly by gender,education,job title,income,working section,and working hospital among the participants (all P<0.05).The CPSS score of the medical staff was related to their gender,education,job title,income,and the grade of working hospital (all P<0.05).The positive coping style score was related to gender,education,job title,income,and the grade of working hospital (all P<0.05).The score of negative coping style differed by gender,education,job title,and the grade of working hospital.There was a significant reverse correlation between CPSS score and active coping style score (r=-0.492,P=0.021) and a significant positive correlation between CPSS score and negative coping style (r=0.177,P=0.030).Conclusion High work stress existed and the stress was influenced by coping style among medical staff in Suzhou city.
