Prevalence characteristics of bacillary dysentery in Wuwei municipality of Gansu province, 2004-2013

Objective To analyze epidemiological characteristics of bacillary dysentery in Wuwei city of Gansu province.Methods The surveillance data on bacillary dysentery in Wuwei city from 2004 to 2013 were collected and analyzed with SPSS 13.0 and EPI Info 2000.Results Totally 6 684 bacillary dysentery cases were reported during the period,of which 4 195 (62.76%) were male and 2 489 (37.24%) were female.The incidence rate of bacillary dysentery decreased from 69.18/100 000 in 2004 to 14.38/100 000 in 2013,with more cases (4 927,73.71%) reported during the years of 2004-2008.More than a half of all bacillary dysentery cases (3 725) were reported between July through September of a year.More than one third of the reported cases were small children under 5 years old (1 596 boys and 841 girls).A majority of the reported cases were farmers,scattered living children,and students.Among 3 280 reported cases with clinical diagnostic records,682 were confirmed by laboratory pathogen detection,including 476 (64.24%) positive for Shigella flexneri,185 (24.97%) for Shigella sonnei,and 21 (2.83%) for Shigella dysenteria but no case positive to Shigella bodyii was diagnosed.Conclusion The incidences of bacillary decreased year by year and there was a seasonality for the epidemics mainly among peasants,students,and small children,with prominent strains of Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei during 2004-2013 in Wuwei city of Gansu province.
