Malaria control in Chongzuo municipality of Guangxi: 1950-2015

  • Objective To analyze the effect of malaria control measures over last 65 years in Chongzuo municipality of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and to provide evidences for future malaria control.Methods Information on malaria prevention and control in Chongzuo municipality during 1995 and 2015 were collected and analyzed statistically.Results During 1950's,highly mixed malaria was prevalent in Chongzuo municipality,with four prevalent Plasmodium species,four kinds of malaria vector,and dominant prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum.The highest annual number and incidence rate of malaria (52 422 and 635.30/100 000) among local residents were reported in 1953;the number and the incidence rate decreased to 1 217 and 62.00/100 000 in 1979.Among local residents,no Plasmodium falciparum case was reported after 1991 and no Plasmodium vivax case after 2000.There have been malaria cases reported among migrant populations since 1980.Of the malaria cases reported during 1980's and 1990's,78.42% were infected in China and 93.75% in foreign countries;of the international infection malaria cases,73.33% were infected in Southeast Asian countries.Conclusion The incidence of malaria in Chongzuo municipality meets the national requirement for malaria eradication among local populations but is still subject to surveillance for the control of imported malaria cases.
