Prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis among examinees of VCT clinics in Lishui city of Zhejiang province,2010-2014

Objective To analyze the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and syphilis among examinees of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV in Lishui city of Zhejiang province during the period from 2010 to 2014,and to provide evidences for making HIV/AIDS prevention strategies.Methods General information and detection results for attendees of VCT clinics administered by Lishui Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention were collected and analyzed with descriptive statistics as constituent ratio and detection rate.Results During the 5-year period,a total of 25 643 people accepted VCT service and the male to female ratio of the attendees was 1:1.26.The majority (76.32%) of the attendees were aged between 20 and 39 yeas.Totally 126 HIV positive individuals were firstly detected and the overall HIV antibody positive rate was 0.49% among the examinees.Of all the HIV positive examinees,29.37% (37) were men who have sex with men (MSM);17.46% (22) reported the history of commercial heterosexual contact;and 13.49% (17) reported the history of non-commercial heterosexual contact with unfixed partners.There was a significant difference in HIV positive rate among the MSM,the attendees with commercial heterosexual contact,and the attendees with unfixed non-commercial heterosexual contact (χ²=133.87,P<0.05).The three groups of attendees with the top three highest HIV positive rate were the MSM (3.68%),attendees with HIV positive spouse or fixed sexual partner (2.89%),and injection drug users (2.13%),without significant differences in the positive rate among the three groups (χ²=0.91,P=0.63).The detection rate of syphilis was 4.23% (971/22 962)and no obvious change trend was observed in the rate (χ²_trend＝1.42,P=0.157).Conclusion VCT for HIV plays an important role in identifying new HIV infection patients in Lishui municipality.
