Awareness of and requirement for knowledge on AIDS among college students in Tianjin city

  • Objective To examine the awareness of and requirement for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related knowledge among college students and to provide references for implementing health education in colleges.Methods We conducted a questionnaire survey on the knowledge about AIDS among 1 952 college students in Tianjin Normal University from September to December 2016 with stratified random cluster sampling.Results In the students,the overall awareness rate of AIDS knowledge was 65.83% and the awareness rates for fundamental knowledge,transmission routes,and prevention measures of AIDS were 59.78%,68.90%,and 73.16%,respectively.Only 24.59% of the students received trainings,major or optional courses on AIDS and 89.96% of the students considered that education programs should be promoted in colleges and the society.There were 92.21%,84.93%,and 69.26% of the students reporting the willingness for acquiring AIDS knowledge via internet,lectures by teachers or doctors,and television programs or films.The top three aspects of most required AIDS-related knowledge were sexual behavior,prevention measures,and love affaire management,which were reported by 96.77%,93.90%,and 81.25% of the students.Conclusion The awareness rate of AIDS-related knowledge is generally low but the requirement for the knowledge is high among college students in Tianjin city.
