Objective To investigate the nutritional status of selenium and iodine of pregnant women in Guangzhou.
Methods The urinary iodine were measured by spectrophotometer.Content of tetraiodothyroxine(T4), thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)in serum were deter mined by radioimmunoassay(RIA).The selenium in whole blood were determined by flu orometry.
Results The selenium concentration in mid-pregnant blood and later-pregnant wo men blood was(0.137 5 0.096 9)μg/ml and(0.152 8±0.085 9)μg/ml, respectively.The median of urinary iodine in mid-and later-pregnant women was 249.3 and 241.2 μg/L, respectively.The proportions with ur inary iodine < 100μg/L in mid-and later-preg nant wo men was 4.5% and 12.5%, respectively.The aver age T4 level in mid-pregnant women was(157.0±66.4)nmol/L, 58.2% of whom were within 54-174 nmol/L(recommended rang).The average T4 level of later pregnant women was (124.4±59.4)nmol/L, 78.3% of whom were within 54-174 nmol/L.The proportion of TSH > 5 mU/L in mid-preg nant was 34.3% and was 81.8%(P < 0.01)in later pregnant.
Conclusion The pregnant women in Guang zhou had good nutritional status of selenium and iodine. The propo rtion of TSH > 5 mU/L in later pregnant women was high(81.8%).
