Study on removal micro-organic matter of water by activated carbon

  •   Objective   To study the removal of micro-organic matter and disinfection by-products of water by activated carbon, and to ozonation and Activated car bon, and to guarantee the safety of drinking water.
Methods   Activated carbon and ozonation fo llowed by activited carbon advanced treatment processes followingth conventional treatment were used for treating the high algae water pretreated by chlorine.
Results   The aver age rates of removal of CODMn, 4+-N, UV254, and chloroform by activate carbon were 66.6%, 50.1%, 94% and 94.7%, respectively; The average rates of removal of them by O3/activated carbon were 57.0%, 47.6%, 80%, 94.3%, respectively.Analysis was made by GC/MS method, which showed that two processes could eliminate the pollution and offered a safe drinking water.
Conclusion   Under the condition of precholorination single activated carbon was better than ozonation and activ ated carbon, which indicated that O3 affect the adsorption of activated carbon insignificantly.
