Objective To investigate the effects of interleukin-1 beta(IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNFA)and interleukin-6(IL-6)induced by chronic alcohol administration on pancreatic islets in rats.
Methods Rats were given alcohol solution(6 mg/kg·d)in different concentrations(10%, 30% and 50%)through intragastric-feeding for 13 weeks. The serum glucose, insulin and the level of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 were deter mined at the end of the study.
Results Compared with the control group, serum glucose in 50% alcohol feeding, was increased and insulin was decreased(P < 0.05).The level of serum IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 were higher(P < 0.05).Chronic alcohol consumption also elevated the level of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 in pancreas of female rats and the level of IL-1β and TNF-α in pancreas of male rats(P < 0.05).The cont ent of IL-6 in pancreas had no differences in the four groups of male rats(P > 0.05).
Conclusion Chronic alcohol intake can impair insulin secretion function of beta cells. Moreover, chronic alcohol intake can up-regulate the production of cytokines(IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6).In a word, chornic alcohol intoxication may have effect on beta cells through cytokines.
