Prevalence investigation of TTV infection in heathy blood donors

  •   Objective   TTV DNA was detected in serum samples obtained from volunteer blood donors living in Xingtai and Beijing City, from patients with chronic hepatitis B as well as chronic hepatitis C living in Beijing City, in an attempt to shed light on the prevalence of TTV infection and the role of TTV infection.
Methods   Modified UTR PCR and N22 PCR were performed, respectively, to test TTV DNA in serum samples from 227 blood donors, 60 chronic hepatitis B patients and 80 chronic hepatitis C patients.
Results   TTV DNA was identified by UTR PCR in 98.3% of 227 volunteer blood donors, in 100% both of 60 chronic hepatitis B patients and 80 chronic hepatitis C patients. On the other hand, among blood donors, chronic hepatits B patients and chr onic hepatitis C patients, TTV DNA was detected by N22 PCR at a frequency of 32.6% (73/227), 35.0% (21/60), 42.5% (34/80), respectively.
Conclusion   The prevalence of TTV DNA detected by UTR PCR was extremely high in examined population, the results obtained by N22 PCR was much less frequently in the same population. The significant difference existed in the prevalence of TTV DNA detected by the two different PCR systems. However, the prevalence of TTV infection detected by same PCR system was similar between healthy blood donors and hepatitis patients.
