Cognition and attitude towards homosexuality among college students of Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao

  •   Objective   To investigate the cognition and attitude towards homosexuality among students in universities of Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao so as to provide a basis for further research regarding homosexuality and HIV prevention.
      Methods   Students in Guangzhou Jinan university, Hongkong lingnan university, Hongkong Chinese university and Macao university were surveyed by questionnaires anonymously, and the data was analyzed by spss 10.0.
      Results   Considering homosexuality to be a sexual deviation: Guangzhou students indicated 27.0%, Hong Kong 19.0% and Macao students 25.5%.Regarding respectful and equal to homosexuality: Guangzhou students indicates 30.6%, Hongkong students 43.2%, and Macao students 34.3%.Self-confessed homosexuality: Guangzhou students indicates 0.8%, Hong Kong students 2.8%, and Macao students 4.8%.
      Conclusion   There are some differences among university students, in cognition and attitude towards homosexuality in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao; the majority of them express their views that the society should have basic understanding and tolerance of homosexual lifestyle.However, most students do not regard such lifestyle as decent.They realize that homosexual behavior possess high risk of contacting HIV virus.
