Study on energy metabolism of ten-twelve years old children

  •   Objective   To measure energy metabolism of ten-twelve years old children.
      Methods   Basic metabolic rate, resting metabolic rate were measured by using open-circuit indirect calorimetry.Total energy expenditure was estimated by time record of activities and factorial approach.Dietary intake was surveyed by weighing method.
      Results   Basic metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate were(212.63±20.54)kJ/h and(227.27±23.52)kJ/h respectively.There was no significant difference between the value of measured basic metabolic rate and the value of predicted basic metabolic rate derived from Schofield equation.BMR was positively correlated with height, weight, body surface area, BMI, LBM and body fat.The estimated value of energy requirement in ten-twelve old children was 8977 kJ/d.
      Conclusion   Basic metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate were(212.63±20.54)kJ/h and(227.27±23.52)kJ/h respectively of ten-twelve years old children.Schofield equation was suitable for predicting BMR in Chinese tentwelve years old children.The estimated value of energy requirement in ten-twelve old children was 8977 kJ/d.
