Influence of sex morals on KAP of unmarried undergraduates

  •   Objective   To understand the changes and current state of the undergraduates KAP; to probe into the influence of the sex morals upon the modern youth; to provide some evidences for the reproductive health programme.
Methods   By way of describing epidemiology, an anonymous investigation was carried out based on the sex morals and sex KAP for 1 190 unmarried undergraduates from four colleges and univerdities in Kunming area.Their ages ranged from 19 to 22.Then the result of the investigation was compared with the one carried out in 1994, which involved 4 189 students.
Results   The followings were the results of the KAP comparison among the youth with different moral values.(1)24% male and female students thought that virginity was not important.16% students thought that sex act before marriage did no harm to both male and female.15% people considered sex act as a promise for love.More than 57% held a tolerant attitude towards sex act before marriage.70% were in favor of having a love affair.48% had a love affair, 37% among them had more than twice love affairs, 54% were once disappointed in a love affair. The above KAP showed such a phenomenon that male > female, city > countryside.(2)Compared with the 1994's investigation, the percent of male students who were in favor of living together beore marriage was 32%, which was 15% drop; whereas the percent of the female was 18% with 5.6% rise. The possibility for both male and female of having a sexual behavior increased 3.4% and 2.0% respectively. The percent of male and female who had sexual experiences raised to 7.7% and 0.6% respectively.(3)The KAP among the unmarried youth closely related with each other(r=0.45-0.81, P < 0.01).The KAP tolerance among the youth who hold a negative attitude towards virginity was 2.3-7.8 times higher than those with a positive attitude(95% CI 1.57%-10.91%, P < 0.01).
Conclusion   The KAP of the undergraduates were closely related with one another and becoming a more and more acceptable trend. And at the same time, traditional virginity value still possessed an impact on the sexual behavior. The education of sex morals would play an important role in our programme to promote a reproductive health among the youth.
